HillTop JLOI Receives a Licence to Educate
"The name's Bond... James Bond."
Words recognised across the world. But was 007 actually a Brother 007?
That was the fascinating question that brought a capacity crowd to Cirencester Freemasons' Hall for the latest HillTop Joint Lodge of Instruction. Brethren and guests from Prince of Wales Lodge No. 951, Chipping Campden Lodge No. 5452, and Sudeley Castle Lodge No. 8976 gathered alongside fellow Freemasons and guests from across Gloucestershire and Wiltshire for a memorable evening of learning, camaraderie, good humour, and more than a hint of secret-agent mystery.
The event poster set the tone perfectly: a fascinating investigation into the real-life individual who may have inspired Ian Fleming's most famous creation.
No Time to Doze
Anyone expecting a dry history lesson quickly discovered this was no ordinary lecture.
W Bro Dick Smith QPM PJGD delivered a masterclass in storytelling, revealing the extraordinary tale of a Royal Navy officer whose life contained enough intrigue, bravery, mystery and adventure to make most Bond films look like a quiet weekend in Chipping Campden.
The audience was taken on a journey involving wartime heroics, secret missions, Soviet prison camps, mistaken reports of death, survival against the odds and enough twists to keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
In fairness, several brethren admitted afterwards that they had arrived expecting a simple answer to the question, "Was Bond a Mason?"
They left with three new theories, six unanswered questions and a sudden urge to order a tuxedo.
The Capaldi Soundtrack Experience
As if Dick's presentation wasn't captivating enough, Chris Capaldi provided a wonderful musical accompaniment with a selection of classic Bond themes.
Within minutes, attendees were mentally arriving at Lodge in an Aston Martin, stepping dramatically from the driver's seat in slow motion while adjusting their cufflinks.
Sadly, reality involved sensible footwear, Gloucestershire traffic and finding a parking space.
Nevertheless, Chris's contribution gave the evening a real touch of cinematic class and was warmly appreciated by everyone present.
Goldfinger, Thunderball and The Brother Who Never Dies
Of course, no Bond-themed evening would be complete without a generous helping of Bond references.
As Dick's fascinating story unfolded, many in the room began to suspect that the real-life inspiration behind Bond may actually have been more adventurous than Bond himself. After all, not every young naval officer can have "killed in action" entered on his Masonic record and then inconveniently turn up alive later in a Soviet prison camp. That sounds less like You Only Live Twice and more like You Were Only Supposed To Live Once.
There were echoes of From Russia With Love, Moonraker, and perhaps even The Living Daylights, although thankfully nobody attempted to arrive at Cirencester Masonic Hall by ejector seat.
The bar also created a few Bond moments of its own. Martinis were discussed far more often than they were consumed, although several brethren were observed ordering drinks with an enthusiasm that suggested they had been waiting all day to say, "Shaken, not stirred."
As the evening progressed, attendees began to reveal their own secret-agent skills:
- The ability to gather intelligence from three separate conversations simultaneously.
- A remarkable talent for remembering ritual performed twenty years ago while forgetting where they left their car keys five minutes earlier.
- The uncanny skill of spotting a new visitor before MI5 could put them under surveillance.
- The ability to detect an open bar from distances normally associated with military radar systems.
Some suggested that the HillTop Lodges could easily form their own intelligence service:
M.I.951, M.I.5452 and M.I.8976.
Their primary mission? Strengthening friendship, promoting Masonic education and ensuring no brother is left behind without hearing about the next event.
By the conclusion of the presentation, the audience had experienced enough intrigue for a Bond film marathon. There were secrets, spies, bravery, mystery, wartime adventures and enough plot twists to leave everyone wondering whether Q Branch had secretly funded the research.
One thing was certain: Dick and Chris delivered a performance worthy of a standing ovation. If Bond had attended, even he might have postponed saving the world for an evening to hear the presentation.
Naturally, any evening involving spies, secrets and mystery also led to discussion about Bond's villains. Thankfully, our gathering was entirely free of Blofelds stroking white cats, Goldfingers plotting world domination or Scaramangas with golden pistols. Although there may have been one or two brethren displaying the organisational efficiency of Spectre when arranging seating, and rumours persist that somewhere within the HillTop Lodges there exists a Masonic mastermind known only as "The Member With No Name", whose sole purpose is to remind everyone they still haven't replied to the latest event invitation. Fortunately, unlike most Bond villains, his plans usually succeed.
And while nobody drove away in an Aston Martin, several brethren were later seen heading towards the local fish and chip shop. Admittedly, this lacked the glamour of Monte Carlo or Casino Royale, but in Gloucestershire, a large cod and chips (or an Italian meal) after an evening of fellowship is every bit as satisfying as saving Western civilisation.
After all, every secret agent needs a debriefing.
Licence to Thrill? Absolutely.
Licence to Learn? Without question.
Licence to Inspire? Mission accomplished.
Three Lodges. One Team.
What makes HillTop special is not simply the quality of the presentations.
It is seeing brethren from our three lodges coming together as one community.
The room was filled with conversation, laughter and the kind of genuine friendship that sits at the very heart of Freemasonry. New members mixed effortlessly with experienced brethren. Visitors were welcomed warmly. Stories were shared. Ideas were exchanged.
There was a real sense that the HillTop initiative is doing exactly what it was designed to do: bringing good men together and making them better friends.
The three lodges each have their own identity, culture and traditions, but evenings like this remind us how much stronger we become when we work together.
A Special Thank You
A huge HillTop thank you must go to W Bro Dick Smith, whose presentation was informative, engaging, expertly researched and delivered with tremendous enthusiasm. It takes real skill to keep an audience captivated for over an hour discussing Masonic history and wartime espionage, but Dick managed it effortlessly.
Our sincere thanks also go to Chris Capaldi, whose musical contribution elevated the evening from excellent to unforgettable. The Bond themes created exactly the right atmosphere and provided the perfect soundtrack to the mystery.
Together, Dick and Chris proved to be every bit as effective a partnership as Bond and Q, although thankfully with fewer explosions.
The HillTop Mission Continues
As attendees drifted home into the Cotswold night, there was a feeling that they had experienced something rather special.
They had learned something new.
They had enjoyed great company.
They had strengthened friendships across the lodges.
And they had discovered that Masonic education doesn't have to be dusty, serious or confined to ritual books. It can be exciting, entertaining and occasionally leave you wondering whether the brother sitting opposite you once parachuted behind enemy lines.
The latest HillTop JLOI was another outstanding success and a wonderful example of what can happen when Prince of Wales Lodge, Chipping Campden Lodge and Sudeley Castle Lodge combine their talents and enthusiasm.
As for whether James Bond was a Mason?
Well, some secrets are meant to remain secret.
After all, this wasn't merely a lecture.
It was a licence to inspire.
